What is Whenever Watersports?
Whenever Watersports provides self-directed access to stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) and kayaks at waterfronts. It operates as an unstaffed solution for waterfront parks looking to offer equipment rentals without needing on-site personnel.
The Outing
This past Sunday afternoon, my niece and I headed to Island Lake State Recreation Area. We had read that they rented SUPs and wanted to enjoy some time on the water before I drove her to the airport, it was our last day together. I had not been to Kent Beach before and had never rented a SUP. I own one, but I figured it would be simpler if we both just rented on-site.
We easily located the SUP and kayak rack. Standing at the rack, I realized I needed to download the Whenever Watersports app and register through it. I downloaded it immediately and began registering my niece as the first user.
Whenever Watersports App Mobile User Experience (UX)
Overall, downloading and starting the account setup were mostly frictionless. However, one major UI glitch stalled our momentum.
During registration, the app asks for your birthdate. A completely reasonable requirement. But the year selection wheel was inexcusable. The app locked into portrait mode, and the birth year was almost completely clipped off at the start of the first digit. It took half a dozen frustrating attempts of scrolling and resetting just to select her birth year, 1979. I genuinely dreaded having to repeat the process for my own.
I was using an iPhone 15 Pro running the latest iOS, one of the most common hardware-software combinations on the market. This is a clear indicator that the app needs more thorough viewport testing across standard screen dimensions.
Getting Our SUPs: Point-of-Sale, Real-World CRO Breakdown
Once my niece’s registration was complete, the app prompted me to scan a board to assign her rental. There were two SUPs available at the rack. I scanned the first one, and the transaction processed smoothly.
Then I stepped up to scan the second board for myself, only to get an error message: “Unavailable under maintenance.”
Grrr. While I was standing at the rack dealing with this error, I noticed a woman nearby with her young son, who was having the exact same issue. They were trying to find two kayaks to rent and had to scan a number of them one by one just to find two that were actually available.
We now had a single rental board reserved for two people, which simply wasn’t going to work. We gave up on hanging out on SUPS and decided to just chill on the beach. Before we could relax, I wanted to contact customer service to release that first SUP so someone else could use it.
The Business Impact: Lost Revenue
From a Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) and revenue perspective, this was a critical failure.
- The Communication Disconnect: Forcing a user to go through onboarding and scan physical equipment just to discover it isn’t available is a major failure in real-time system status communication.
- The Lost Sale: Whenever Watersports instantly went from completing a two-board rental to zero.
Simple digital signage at the rack, or live equipment availability in the app before registration, would prevent this friction entirely. Keeping rental inventory operational during a peak summer weekend should be a top operational priority. Having a field team swap out broken equipment would easily pay for itself in captured revenue and brand goodwill.
UX & CRO Metric Breakdown
| UX/CRO Touchpoint | App Performance Evaluation | Revenue & Business Impact |
| Mobile Form UI | Low – Date-picker year wheel cut off in portrait view. | High friction; increases bounce risk during onboarding. |
| Inventory Transparency | Low – Requires manual scanning of physical items to check status. | Direct Lost Sale (intended 2 rentals completed 0). |
| Customer Support Response | High – Text-based, fast (<12 min resolution), polite. | Rescues brand reputation, though transaction was lost. |
| Retention Incentive | Medium – 15% discount code offered. | Missed opportunity for high-value recovery (e.g., BOGO). |
Customer Support & Service Breakdown
Even though I hadn’t entered my credit card details yet, resolving the reserved first board was the entire focus of my customer support interaction. Overall, I would rate Whenever Watersports’ customer support as stellar
They made support easily accessible, and the entire interaction took just 12 minutes, allowing us to quickly put the tech issues behind us and go enjoy our beach towels and chairs.
- Promptness (Very Satisfied): Support was handled entirely via text. Whether driven by a well-designed AI agent or a sharp human representative, there was zero lag time between messages. Resolving this in 12 minutes meant the world to me, as it allowed me to focus on spending time with my niece
- Politeness (Very Satisfied): The text tone was warm, polite, and reassuring, using phrasing like “Thank you,” “I understand,” and helpful emojis 😊.
- Professionalism (Very Satisfied): The agent stayed focused, asked targeted questions to diagnose the issue, and guided me to a fast resolution
- Personalization & Retention (Satisfied): At the end of the exchange, they offered a 15% discount code for my next rental
While the discount was a nice gesture, it didn’t quite make up for losing our planned afternoon on the water. For an issue that completely derails a planned outing for two, a Buy One, Get One (BOGO) offer would have been a far more compelling recovery strategy
Retention Takeaway: Customer retention isn’t just about apologizing; it’s about matching the remedy to the value of the customer’s lost experience.
